The journey from 2004
In its inaugural year 2004, the Citi Micro Entrepreneur Awards program was piloted in the urban areas of the country. An encouraging response from the micro entrepreneurs and other stakeholders such as NGOs, Micro Finance Institutions and banks, motivated Citi to expand its scope and establish the Awards as an annual program. In 2005, the program also covered rural areas and to mark the International Year of Micro Credit, Citi Foundation partnered with United Nations Development Programme to host the Citi Micro Entrepreneur Awards in India. With each successive year the Awards program has expanded in geographical reach and thematic scope, bringing in its fold many more communities and causes while honoring and felicitating exemplary micro entrepreneurs.
Recognizing the dynamic enterprise development environment in the country and the growing proactive role of communities, in its ninth year, the Awards had a deepening impact by shifting focus from individual entrepreneurs towards enterprises that are collectively owned or benefit larger community groups. The 2012 Awards therefore, recognized and honored exemplary community micro enterprises, whose members and owners had overcome poverty and other socio economic challenges, to successfully build self-sustaining businesses, create employment and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Additionally, the Awards will also recognize the significant role played by organizations in nurturing and promoting such micro enterprises.
In its tenth year, Citi Micro Enterprise Awards 2013 continues to identify, recognize and honor community micro enterprise and their promoters.
